Pratyush Kumar’s The Science of HER — A Moving First-Love Story Where Science, Emotion, Memory and the Uncertainty of Human Connection Intersect

The Science of HER by Pratyush Kumar is a distinctive first-love story that brings together the precision of scientific thinking with the unpredictability of human emotion. Written through the perspective of a researcher, the novel explores love, memory, uncertainty, family expectations, separation, and the experiences that remain long after a relationship has ended.

The story follows Pratyush, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student at IIT Bombay who is comfortable with equations, experiments, and the predictable logic of engineering. He believes that love is something other people experience—until an unexpected encounter at a campus event near Powai Lake changes the rhythm of his carefully ordered life.

There, he meets Nandita, a Physics student who is discussing eigenvalues. What begins as an ordinary encounter gradually becomes something far more significant. From conversations and observations to moments shared at Juhu Beach, their connection develops through small details that quietly acquire meaning.

Nandita draws fractals in the sand and speaks about the temporary nature of certain things. She visits Pratyush at his laboratory with dosa, while he keeps a family ring hidden in his desk drawer, waiting for the right moment to give it to her on her birthday. These seemingly simple moments become part of a relationship that Pratyush approaches with the same attention to detail that defines his scientific mind.

But love, unlike an experiment, does not always produce the expected result.

One night, Pratyush’s call goes to voicemail. Two weeks later comes a sentence that changes everything: please don’t call me anymore. Behind those words lies a reason shaped by family and circumstances, leaving Pratyush to confront an outcome that cannot be solved through logic or analysis.

Years later, at a conference in Zürich, a name is unexpectedly read into a microphone. The moment brings the past back into the present, reopening memories that had never been entirely resolved.

The Science of HER is presented as a story written like an experiment by someone who knows that he can never truly remain objective about the subject. Its strength lies in the contrast between scientific precision and emotional uncertainty, creating a narrative that feels both intellectually distinctive and deeply personal.

Author Pratyush Kumar grew up in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay, an M.Tech. from the University of Hyderabad, and a B.Tech. from LPU Jalandhar. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zürich, where his work focuses on computational fluid dynamics and machine learning for physical systems.

The Science of HER is his debut book and transforms a deeply personal experience into a literary exploration of first love, timing, memory, family, and the limits of objectivity.

At its heart, the novel asks a simple yet enduring question: what happens when the one thing you cannot calculate becomes the experience you remember most?
