The Literature Mag (“we”, “us”, “our”) is an independent digital literary publication about books, authors and reading culture. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit our website, why we collect it, how we look after it and the choices you have. By using the website you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information we collect
We collect as little personal information as possible. Depending on how you use the website, this may include:
- Newsletter sign-ups: your email address and the date you subscribed.
- Contact form messages: your name, email address, the topic you choose and your message. These are delivered to our editorial inbox by email and are not stored in the website’s database.
- Comments: the name, email address and (optional) website you enter, your comment, and your IP address and browser details, which help us detect spam. Your email address is never shown publicly.
- Book and author submissions: information you choose to send us, such as book details, cover images, author photographs, biographies and contact details.
- Contributor accounts: for writers and editors who have an account, a username, email address, display name, biography and optional profile photo.
- Technical information: like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records basic server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested and the date and time) to keep the website secure and running.
2. How we use your information
- To send you our newsletter, if you have subscribed.
- To reply to your messages, review requests and feature or collaboration enquiries.
- To publish and moderate comments and to protect the website from spam and abuse.
- To prepare reviews, author features and other editorial content you have asked us to consider.
- To maintain, secure and improve the website.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information, and we do not use it for automated decision-making or profiling.
3. Cookies
We keep cookies to a minimum and do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
- Comment cookies: if you leave a comment and choose to save your details, your name, email and website are stored in cookies for one year so you do not have to re-enter them.
- Login cookies: contributors who log in receive cookies that keep them signed in. These are removed when they log out or after a short period.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The website will still work, although you may need to re-enter your details when commenting.
4. Third-party services
- Google Fonts: our typefaces are loaded from Google’s servers, which means your IP address is shared with Google to deliver the fonts. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Gravatar: if you comment, a scrambled version of your email address may be sent to Gravatar (Automattic) to check for a profile picture.
- Social sharing: our Facebook, X and Instagram buttons are simple links. Nothing is shared with those platforms until you click a button, after which their own privacy policies apply.
- Instagram share images: the “Download” and “Share on Instagram” images are created entirely inside your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to our servers or to any third party until you choose to post it.
- Embedded content: articles may include embedded videos or posts from other websites (for example YouTube or Instagram). These behave exactly as if you had visited the other website, which may collect data about you.
- Hosting, email and backup providers: trusted providers store our website, deliver our emails and keep secure backups on our behalf.
5. When we share information
We only share personal information with the service providers listed above where it is necessary to run the website, or when we are required to do so by law, by a court order or to protect our rights, our readers or the public.
6. How long we keep it
- Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you.
- Emails and contact messages: only as long as needed to respond and keep a reasonable record of our correspondence.
- Comments: for as long as the comment is published, unless you ask us to remove it.
- Backups: kept for a limited period and then overwritten.
7. Your rights
Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and, where applicable, other data protection laws such as the GDPR, you can:
- ask what personal information we hold about you and request a copy;
- ask us to correct or update inaccurate information;
- ask us to delete your information;
- withdraw your consent at any time, for example by unsubscribing from the newsletter;
- raise a complaint or grievance with us.
To use any of these rights, email us at theliteraturemag@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days. We may ask you to confirm your identity before acting on a request.
8. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encrypted (HTTPS) connections, restricted administrator access and regular backups. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work hard to protect your data.
9. Children
Our website is intended for a general readership and is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
10. Links to other websites
Our articles often link to other websites, such as online bookstores, publishers and authors’ pages. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those websites, and we encourage you to read their policies.
